Powertherm has successfully completed the design, supply, and installation of over 26,000m² of industrial insulation and cladding at the Skelton Grange Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Working in partnership with Hitachi Zosen Inova (now Kanadevia Inova), the project supports a state of the art plant capable of generating 49MW of energy, enough to power around 100,000 homes…while diverting 410,000 tonnes of residual waste from landfill each year.

Combining in-house insulation system design with expert on-site installation, Powertherm delivered a fully integrated solution across critical systems including the boiler, flue gas treatment, and water steam cycle. The project required precise engineering to meet strict thermal performance targets, including safe surface temperatures and controlled heat loss, all in line with BS 5970 standards.

At peak, a workforce of 45 ensured the project was delivered safely, on time, and to the highest technical standards.

Powertherm has successfully completed a critical repair and upgrade project at a UK biomass power plant, restoring both safety and operational efficiency through a fully engineered thermal insulation solution.

The Problem

Following a detailed site inspection, our team identified major issues with the existing insulation system installed by a previous contractor, including insufficient insulation thickness and incorrectly specified cladding. These faults resulted in excessive heat transfer, surface scorching, and external temperatures exceeding safe limits, posing a serious risk to personnel.

Our Solution

Powertherm was appointed to design and implement a compliant, high-performance insulation system repair. Combining in-house insulation system design, scaffolding access, and expert installation, the team installed a multi-layer mineral wool insulation system supported by a DUK Rail substructure and finished with durable aluminium cladding.

The Result

The upgraded system successfully reduced surface temperatures to safe levels, eliminated heat loss issues, and improved overall plant efficiency, helping to lower energy waste and operational costs.

Across the project, our skilled experts delivered over 9,000m² of technical thermal insulation solutions and 7,900m² of protective cladding, alongside specialist electrical trace heating systems designed to ensure reliable process temperature control. To complement this, we installed custom flexible insulation jackets that provide both efficiency and ease of maintenance. Safe and efficient access was made possible through the supply and management of 130+ tonnes of scaffolding materials, supported by a peak workforce of more than 30 qualified professionals.

Rising energy costs and tightening environmental targets are pushing food manufacturers to find smarter ways to save energy. Recently, our TIPCHECK Experts carried out a comprehensive thermal energy audit at a food production facility, uncovering multiple opportunities to cut energy waste and improve efficiency.

By scanning pipework, flanges, valves, and strainers, we identified equipment operating between 40°C and 250°C where insulation upgrades would deliver significant benefits. The results speak for themselves – nearly 890,000 kWh of energy saved per year.

This case study highlights how uninsulated or poorly insulated pipework can be a hidden drain on resources, and how targeted insulation measures can help facilities not only reduce emissions but also comply with schemes like Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme.
