Storage Tank Maintenance
Project Overview
As part of an ongoing storage tank maintenance project, Powertherm teams completed full blasting, coating, insulation and cladding work scopes on a large scale gas oil storage tank measuring 49 metres in diameter and 19 metres in height.
Scope of Work
The project involved work scoping and planning of the complete surface preparation of the tanks outer shell (2989m²) and roof (3745m²), before the application of a protective coating system. This was followed by the installation of a high-performance technical insulation and sheet metal cladding system to the shell, designed to deliver long-term durability, thermal performance and weather resistance.
Surface Preparation & Coating System
Prior to the coatings system being applied, the tank’s outer shell and roof were fully blasted to SA 2.5 to clean the surface of any contamination and achieve the required surface profile for the paint to properly adhere to the tank’s surface.
A three-coat epoxy paint system was then applied to provide robust corrosion protection and meet the operational lifespan of the asset.
Insulation and Cladding System
The shell was insulated with two fully staggered layers of 50mm thick mineral wool slabs. Each layer was secured with stainless steel banding; incorporating springs to ensure consistent tension and maintain system integrity during operations.
The insulated shell was finished with box profile Aluzinc sheeting that was secured using hex stitching screws. Further restraint was added with stainless steel banding and springs for enhanced structural support.
Silicone inspection points were installed at the tank’s cardinal points to allow for future inspection and maintenance requirements. While all joints and seams were sealed with sealant to ensure complete weatherproofing of the tank.
