Refractory Lining

Prolonging asset life-cycles for reduced operational costs

Powertherm is at the forefront of refractory lining projects, completing numerous projects of all scales.

Refractory lining is applied to the internal surface of process equipment.  It protects the steel work structure of furnaces, boilers, vessels, ducting, and other equipment from extreme conditions, acting as a protective layer of insulation on the internal surface.  Refractory protects equipment from extreme temperatures, abrasion, corrosion and chemical erosion.

Whether it’s a predetermined specification or a bespoke installation requiring design work, we have the experience and expertise to provide an all-inclusive service, on new installations and for maintenance requirements.

Powertherm offers refractory lining services on a full range of small to large industrial assets including:

  • Boilers
  • Furnaces
  • Incinerators
  • Heat exchangers
  • Petrochemical equipment: Crackers
  • Piping and ducting: Exhausts, diffusers, flues, process assets

Proven Service Delivery

Our in-house teams understand the considerations required when creating the right solution to a client’s lining requirements: thermal movement and expansion, chemical erosion, corrosion and abrasion resistance.  Our dedicated refractory division has vast experience working with all types of refractory materials and methods of application. They understand that quality control and assurance, and health and safety, are fundamental to the success of a project.

Our experts have the skills to carryout specialist installation techniques, including ramming, packing, gunning, casting, bricking, pumping, applying ceramic fibrous products and executing and safely managing full dry outs.  They work with all types of materials such as phosphate products, ceramic fibre, firebrick, calcium silicate and microporous panels in veneer, slab, modular and blanket forms, and all types of anchorage methods.

In support of our Refractory Lining Services, we have the technical expertise to carry out inspections of linings and provide design drawings and thermal calculations for projects.  We offer a turnkey end-to-end service covering the full life-cycle of assets, from design and engineering to installation and ongoing maintenance.  Projects can be completed either on-site or off-site at our Head Office facility, with both options offering access to our experienced and extensive team of expert operatives, engineers, and project managers.

What is the purpose of refractory lining?

Refractory lining is a heat-resistant material system installed on the interior surfaces of furnaces, kilns, reactors, boilers, incinerators, and other high-temperature industrial vessels. Its primary purpose is to contain and withstand extreme heat while protecting the structural shell of the vessel from thermal damage.

Refractory linings serve several critical functions, including:

  • Thermal protection:The lining insulates the outer steel shell of a vessel from the intense temperatures generated inside. Without refractory protection, the structural integrity of the vessel would be rapidly compromised.
  • Process efficiency: By retaining heat within the process environment, refractory linings reduce energy consumption and improve the thermal efficiency of combustion and processing operations.
  • Chemical resistance: In petrochemical, chemical processing, and waste incineration applications, refractory materials must resist attack from aggressive gases, molten slag, acids, and alkalis as well as heat. The choice of refractory material is therefore partly determined by the chemical environment inside the vessel.
  • Erosion and abrasion resistance. In applications where high-velocity gases, fluids, or particulates are present, refractory linings must also resist physical wear.

Refractory materials are broadly categorised as castables, plastic refractories, ceramic fibre systems, and preformed shapes such as bricks and tiles. The selection of the appropriate system depends on operating temperature, thermal cycling frequency, chemical exposure, and the geometry of the vessel.

Powertherm’s refractory lining services cover a broad range of industrial applications, with experienced teams capable of installing, repairing, and maintaining refractory systems across a broad range of sectors.
