Industrial Acoustic Insulation – Silencers

THE RESULT

Powerteam onsite for the supply and installation of industrial acoustic insulation and cladding to 20 silencers to reduce acoustic pollution to the surrounding environment.

THE CHALLENGE

Industrial silencers absorb and reduce noise/ vibration levels from equipment and machinery to meet regulations and minimise environmental disruptions. They incorporate sound-deadening materials, fabrics, and compounds which absorb the noise from the flow of elements such as exhaust gases.

To comply with rules and regulations on acceptable acoustic levels our client required specialist installation of industrial acoustic insulation and cladding to the silencers of 20 generators at two flexible power generation facilities in the UK.

WHAT WE DID

Powertherm supplied, manufactured, and installed mineral wool insulation and cladding – with an acoustic insulation barrier applied – to 20 silencers across two locations. The shell, cap end, supports, tees and expansion bellows of the silencers were insulated and cladded by our expert insulation operatives.

We specified the insulation materials in two different types due to the required thermal performance of the system and the way it could be installed on the silencers.

The 5.11 Lin/M shell was insulated with 100mm thick foil backed mineral wool PSM (140kg/m³). With the cap ends, supports, tees and expansion bellows insulated with 100mm thick mineral wool slab (100kg/m³). All insulation was secured with stainless-steel banding.

To reduce the acoustic output of the silencers to acceptable levels we installed an acoustic barrier. We specified a polymeric 10kg/m³ barrier that was applied to the inside face of the 0.7mm plain Aluzinc cladding.

All sheet metal fabrications were manufactured at Head Office by our Sheet Metal Operatives before being installed on-site by Powertherm Thermal Insulation Engineers.

To provide safe access to the workface, our access division erected, and dismantled upon completion, independent scaffolds in 2m lifts per silencer. We also provided scaffold inspection and tagging services throughout the project to ensure the scaffolds were fit-for-purpose and safe to use.
