Powertherm Chosen to Spearhead Insulation Project in the Energy-from-Waste Sector
We’re a renowned leader in the field of insulation services and as such we’ve been entrusted with a pivotal role in Hitachi Zosen Inova’s (HZI) latest endeavour in the Power Generation industry; an Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility located within Yorkshire in Leeds.
This exciting partnership between HZI and Powertherm marks a significant stride towards a greener future as our teams contribute their expertise to this innovative project, aiming to produce sustainable energy capable of powering over 100,000 homes in the United Kingdom.

The project, known as Skelton Grange, is set to become a beacon of environmental sustainability. Powertherm’s scope of work includes the implementation of insulation solutions across lines 1 and 2, where teams will install substructures, insulation, and sheet metal fabrications – of various specifications – on critical components such as the:
- Boiler/ CSP System (Primary Air system, Secondary Air System, Boiler, Grate and Silencers).
- Solid Handling (Residue Discharge/ Transport, Pneumatic Ash Transport ECO, Boiler Ash Discharge).
- WSC System (Steam Exhaust System, LP Condensate Preheater, Main Condensate Tanks, Steam Ducting).
- Flue Gas Turbine (FGT) (Reactor, Filter Chambers, Raw Gas Duct, ID-Fan).
- Balance of Plant (BOP) (various tanks, skids, piping, and ducting).
Furthermore, Powertherm’s role extends to insulating key areas of the boiler system including the front, rear & side walls, ignition & burnout roofs, and chutes, where a convection barrier will be expertly installed over the final layer of insulation. In addition, Powertherm will supply and install supplementary substructure elements, pre-manufactured checker plate cladding and associated handrails for the walkable areas of the boiler: roof vertical passes, ignition and burnout roofs, further enhancing the facility’s overall performance and safety. Acoustic insulation solutions will also be required on industrial equipment like fans, silencers, exhaust systems and steam ducting to control excessive noise levels.
These components, integral to the facility’s operation, will be insulated to provide personal protection, control temperatures to optimise processes and offer protection from the surrounding environment. As well as contribute significantly to energy conservation and sustainability, and reduced costs. Once in operation the components will operate at extreme temperatures, ranging from 60°C to over 500°C. After being insulated, they will be clad with prefabricated aluminium sheet metal (flat, profiled, & perforated where applicable) to ensure efficiency, durability and further protect the underlying asset.

Flexible insulation covers will be manufactured at our state-of-the-art facility at Head Office for valves, flanges and other equipment like instruments. Insulation covers are an innovative alternative to insulation and cladding and preferred in situations where the equipment is required to be accessed on a regular basis for maintenance requirements, as covers can be quickly and easily removed and reinstalled.
The Skelton Grange facility is poised to be a game-changer in the EfW industry, with an expected annual generation capacity of up to 49 megawatts (gross) of combined heat and power. This energy output, derived from processing up to 410,000 tonnes of residual waste each year, is a monumental stride towards diverting household waste from landfills or export, as well as hitting the UK’s target of NET Zero carbon emissions. The facility’s power generation capacity is not only impressive but also impactful, producing enough clean and sustainable energy to meet the demands of more than 100,000 homes in the UK.
Powertherm is proud to be an integral part of this forward-thinking project, contributing its expertise to a venture that aligns with its commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable energy solutions and setting the standard in industrial insulation solutions. As work on the Skelton Grange EfW facility progresses, we remain dedicated to delivering insulation services of the highest calibre, ensuring the success of this visionary endeavour.
